Without the considerable contributions made by individuals around Australia in promoting and encouraging cycling, much of the progress that has been made would not have been possible.
This award seeks to recognise the special achievement of individuals that have demonstrated excellence, innovation and commitment to promoting and encouraging cycling.
Eligibility (Two categories)
Professional The nominee is an individual who has demonstrated a high level of commitment in advancing cycling within their professional field of expertise. They have been innovative and shown commitment and excellence beyond their duty and achieved outcomes that have made a real difference in creating more cycle friendly communities and/or in increasing the level of cycling.
Honorary The nominee is an individual who has been acting on their own behalf, or on behalf of an organisation, in an unpaid capacity. They have demonstrated innovation, commitment and excellence through education, promotion, policy development, infrastructure design, encouragement or lobbying
Nominations for this award should include a short outline of the particular contributions by the individual and their impact. Things to consider:
- What has been achieved and what difference has it made to cycling?
- What is the key outstanding achievement and in what sector?
- How has the individual been able to influence other stakeholders and lift the profile of cycling?
- How long has the individual been involved in advancing cycling?
- What challenges have they overcome?
Special Achievement Award
by a Bicycle Organisation
Bicycle organisations have been fundamental in raising awareness of cycling issues, lobbying for improved conditions for bicycle riders, promoting cycling and providing support for bicycle riders.
This award seeks to recognize excellence, innovation and special achievement in promoting and encouraging cycling and in achieving improved conditions for bicycle riders. The relative size and budget of the organization will be taking into consideration when judging this award.
Eligibility
The nominated organization is a bicycle advocacy or bicycle user group representing the interests of bicycle riders.
The organization will have made a considerable contribution towards promoting and encouraging cycling and improving conditions for bicycle riders.
Nominations for this award should include a short outline of the organization, its history, membership, number of staff and volunteers, and a description of the special achievements by the organization. Things to consider:
- What key things has the organization achieved and what difference has it made to cycling?
- What partnerships has the organization established?
- What challenges has the organisation faced and how have they addressed them?
Local Government Award
for Special Initiative to Encourage and Promote Cycling
Local Government plays a vital role in promoting and encouraging cycling through planning, design, traffic management, investment and other relevant initiatives. This award seeks to recognise innovative approaches by Local Government in making their communities more bicycle friendly and/or in promoting and encouraging cycling.
Eligibility
The nominee must be a Local Government body. Nominations may include collaborative projects undertaken with schools, health and community organisations, and other relevant bodies.
Demonstrated innovation in improving conditions for bicycle riders and/or in promoting and encouraging cycling is necessary.
Nominations for this award should include a short outline of the particular initiative, departments involved and its achievements. Things to consider:
- What is the commitment by council to cycling? (financial as well as organizational)
- What are the key achievements?
- Is the council playing a leadership role in the region/state?
- What are the council's internal policies that promote and encourage cycling amongst staff and councilors?
- What partnerships has the council formed?
- Does the council work with cycling organisations to determine priorities?
- How long has the council supported cycling and what is its vision?
Award for an Educational Institution
for Innovation in Encouraging Cycling to School
Cycling to school provides an opportunity for increased physical activity, encourages independence, improves self-confidence, reduces congestion around schools and fosters social interaction. Sadly the number of children riding to school has declined since the 1970s. This award seeks to recognise commitment and innovation in promoting and encouraging cycling to school.
Eligibility
This award is for public or private primary and secondary schools. The winner will have been successful in implementing strategies to increase the number of children riding to school regularly.
Nominations for this award should include an outline of the initiative, partnerships established and outcomes achieved. Things to consider:
- What strategies have been implemented to encourage cycling?
- How has this been communicated with parents, teachers and other stakeholders?
- What partnerships have been formed?
- What strategies have been implemented to overcome barriers?
What percentage of students regularly ride to school?
Award for Bicycle Friendly Business
Businesses can play an important role in encouraging cycling by providing facilities for staff and customers and by promoting access by bicycle. End of trip facilities, good signage, incentives and consultation with bicycle riders are all important aspects of a bicycle friendly business which is also good for the bottom line. This award seeks to recognise innovation and commitment by businesses in catering for the needs of bicycle riders, be it staff or customers.
Eligibility
This award is for any business, organisation or Government Department that has demonstrated commitment and innovation in encouraging staff and or customers to regularly cycle.
Nominations for this award should include an outline of the initiatives implemented to actively encourage staff and customers to travel by bicycle. Things to consider:
- What are the key commitments, financial and human resources?
- What at the key outcomes achieved?
- What partnerships have been established?
- How does the achievement set a benchmark in Australia?
- Do the initiatives have the support and commitment from management?
Award for Contribution towards
Cycling by a Politician
Politicians at Local, State and Federal Government levels can make vital contributions by acting as champions for bicycle initiatives and projects in their electorates or during Government policy formation.
This award recognises a special achievement by a politician who has by their own example, or by the support for investments and programs, advanced cycling.
Eligibility
This award is for current members of a parliament or local government councilors who have demonstrated initiative and a commitment to cycling by initiating and/or supporting projects or policies that have made a real difference to bicycle riders and cycling.
Nominations for this award should include a short outline of the particular contribution by the individual in his/her role as politician or councillor. Things to consider:
- What role have they played in achieving better outcomes for cycling?
- How have they gained community, staff and fellow politician support for cycling?
- Are they involved in other committees which advance cycling at the local, state and national level?
- Have they changed their own travel behaviour?
- What is their key outstanding achievement?
Award for contributions towards
cycling by a bicycle retailer
Bicycle retailers play an important role in promoting and encouraging cycling by providing an excellent service, information and encouragement, being consumer responsive, as well as by supporting local initiatives. This award seeks to recognise bicycle retailers that have shown commitment and innovation in encouraging cycling.
Eligibility
Bicycle retailers in Australia who have made a considerable contribution towards encouraging and promoting cycling in the community.
Nominations for this award should include an outline of the initiatives and strategies in encouraging and promoting cycling implemented by the nominee. Things to consider:
- What are the key activities the retailer is doing to promote cycling?
- Has the retailer formed any partnerships with cycling organisations and businesses to promote cycling?
- What are the key outstanding achievements?
How long has the retailer been established and how many staff are employed?
