1. Professional of the Year
This award recognises professional staff who have shown an outstanding commitment to promote and encourage cycling.
Eligibility: the nominee has shown commitment in improving cycling within their professional field of expertise. The nominee has been innovative, achieved results that have made a difference to create cycling friendly environments and facilitated an increase in bicycling participation. Please include references to the following points when making your nomination for Professional of the Year Award;
- What have they achieved and what difference has it made to participation in cycling?
- What are their outstanding achievements?
- How long have they been involved in cycling activities?
- What groups have they been involved with?
- What challenges have they encountered and overcome?
2. Volunteer of the Year
This award recognises a volunteer who has shown an outstanding commitment to promote and encourage cycling.
Eligibility: the nominee has been acting on their own behalf, or for an organisation, in an unpaid or voluntary role. The nominee has shown commitment to bicycling issues through education, promotion, policy development, infrastructure design, encouragement or advocacy. Please include references to the following points when making your nomination for Volunteer of the Year Award:
- What have they achieved and what difference has it made to participation in cycling?
- What are their outstanding achievements?
- How long have they been involved in cycling activities?
- What groups have they been involved with?
- What challenges have they encountered and overcome?
3. Cycling Organisation Achievement
This award recognises achievements by a cycling group in encouraging greater participation in bike riding. Cycling groups are important to supporting participation, promote cycling, lobby for better conditions for riders and increased awareness. The relative size and budget of the organisation will be taken into consideration.
Eligibility: The nominated organisation may be a bicycle advocacy group or organisation, a cycling club or bicycle user group representing the interests of riders. The organisation will have made a considerable contribution towards promoting, encouraging cycling and improving conditions. Please include references to the following points when making your nomination for the Special Achievement Award for a Bicycling Organisation/Group:
- What key things has the organisation/group achieved and what difference has it made to cycling?
- What partnerships has the organisation established?
- What challenges has the organisation faced and how have they addressed them?
4. Local Government Achievement Award
This award recognises achievements by local governments in making their communities more bicycle friendly, promoting and encouraging cycling. Local government associations (LGA), which includes councils and shires, plays a vital role in encouraging cycling through planning, design, traffic management, programs and provision of infrastructure.
Eligibility: The nominee must be a Local Government body. Nominations may include collaborative projects undertaken with schools, health, community organisations and other relevant bodies. Demonstrated innovation in improving conditions for bicycle riders, promoting and encouraging cycling is necessary. Please include references to the following points when making your nomination for the Local Government Award:
- What is the demonstrated commitment by the LGA to cycling?
- What are the key achievements?
- Is the council playing a leadership role in the region/state?
- What are the LGA’s organisational policies that promote and encourage cycling amongst staff and councilors?
- What partnerships has the LGA formed?
- Does the LGA work with cycling organisations to determine priorities?
- How long has the LGA supported cycling and what are their aims to continue that into the future?
5. Educational Institution Achievement Award
This award recognises commitment and innovation in promoting and encouraging cycling to school or educational institution. Cycling provides an opportunity for increased physical activity, encourages independence, improves self-confidence, reduces congestion and fosters social interaction.
Eligibility: This award is open to an educational institution. The winner will have been successful in implementing strategies to increase the number of students riding to school and classes regularly.

- What strategies have been implemented to encourage cycling?
- How has this been communicated with students, parents, teachers and other stakeholders?
- What partnerships have been formed?
- What strategies have been implemented to overcome barriers?
- What percentage of students are riding regularly?
6. Cycling Friendly Business Award
This award is for a business who’s core operation is not related to cycling or the sale of cycling related product. The award recognises commitment by a business in promoting or providing increased opportunities for their staff or customers to participate in bike riding. Businesses play an important role in encouraging cycling by providing facilities for staff and customers and by promoting access by bicycle. End of trip facilities, good signage, incentives and consultation with bicycle riders are all important aspects of a bicycle friendly business which is also good for the business bottom line.
Eligibility: This award is for any business, organisation or Government department that has demonstrated commitment and innovation in encouraging staff and or customers to regularly cycle. Please include references to the following points when making your nomination for Cycling Friendly Business Award:
- What is the businesses key commitments to cycling?
- What key outcomes have they achieved?
- What partnerships have they established?
- How does the achievement set a benchmark in their local area/Australia?
- How has the business demonstrated support and commitment for cycling initiatives?
7. Contribution by a Politician Award
This award recognises a special achievement by a politician who has, by their own example or by the support for investments and programs, advanced cycling. Politicians at Local, State and Federal Government levels make vital contributions by acting as supporters for cycling initiatives and projects in their electorates or during policy formation.
Eligibility: This award is for current serving members of federal, state or local governments who have shown initiative and commitment by leading and/or supporting projects or policies that have made a real difference to cycling. Please include references to the following points when making your nomination for the Contribution by a Politician Award:
- What role have they played in achieving better outcomes for cycling?
- How have they gained community, staff and fellow political support for cycling?
- Are they involved in other committees which advance cycling at the local, state and national level?
- Have they changed their own means of transport?
- What is their key outstanding achievement?
8. Bicycle Retailer Achievement Award
This award recognises bicycle retailers that have shown commitment and innovation in encouraging cycling. Bicycle retailers play an important role in encouraging cycling by providing customer service and encouragement.
Eligibility: Bicycle retailers in Australia who have made a considerable contribution towards encouraging, promoting cycling in the community and being consumer responsive, as well as by supporting activities in their local area in 2011. Please include references to the following points when making your nomination for the Bicycle Retailer Award:
- What are the key activities the retailer is doing to promote cycling?
- Has the retailer formed any partnerships with cycling organisations and businesses to promote cycling?
- What are the key outstanding achievements?
- How long has the retailer been established and how many staff are employed?
9. National Media Achievement Award
This award recognises commitment by a journalist, media outlet or media personality to actively promote cycling and the benefits associated with cycling. The Australian media plays a critical role in supporting cycling, by having the ability to influence people’s attitudes towards cycling and their cycling behavior.
Eligibility: This award is for current journalists, reporters, media personalities, media organisations or editorial staff who have demonstrated initiative and commitment to cycling through reports or programs that support cycling.

- What role has the journalist or media organisation played in promoting cycling?
- What issues have they overcome in providing positive perspectives on cycling?
- How have they promoted ongoing support for cycling?
- What has been their key outstanding achievement or outcome?
10. Special Initiative or Event to Promote Cycling
This award seeks to recognise an initiative or event that has shown strong innovation and commitment to create interest and support for cycling. Individual initiatives and events play a critical role in the overall promotion of cycling. These events can either be one-off or annual to gain support and create improved environments for cycling.
Eligibility: This award is open to any organisation or individual who has delivered an outstanding initiative or event to promote cycling. Please include references to the following points when making your nomination for the Special Initiative or Event to Promote Cycling:
- What role has this activity played in achieving positive promotion for cycling?
- How has this program demonstrated innovation in the promotion of cycling?
- How does this event promote long term improvements to cycling?
- How has this initiative or event promoted?
